NBA Studs and Duds: 12/29/08

Studs:Al Jefferson, Minnesota TimberwolvesTimberwolves fans can rejoice with their second win in three games, and Al Jefferson was a major part of tonight's. The Grizzlies had no answer for Jefferson, who scored a season-high 38 points and snagged 16 rebounds in a 108-98 overtime victory. [boxscore]Shaquille O'Neal, Phoenix SunsAfter Steve Nash went out of the game in the first quarter with back spasms, the Diesel took the game into his own hands and helped the Suns get a 110-102 win against the Thunder. O'Neal put together a complete game with 28 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks and made a very un-Shaq-like 8 of 12 free throws. [boxscore]Stephen Jackson, Golden State WarriorsIn true, frantic Warriors fashion, Stephen Jackson produced his fourth 30-point game as the Warriors beat the Raptors 117 to 111. Jackson also got himself involved in all other aspects of the game as he had 7 rebounds,...

Lakers vs. Warriors

PREGAME Celtics' starting five: Belinelli, Crawford, Jackson, Wright and Biedrins Lakers' starting five: Fisher, Bryant, Walton, Gasol and Bynum Key match-ups: This game is just like the Knicks' game against the Lakers. It's small ball vs. whatever ball the Lakers decide to play. I can't call it! The Lakers played an excellent game against the Boston Celtics on Christmas day. The Lakers, also, played an excellent game against the Hornets in their game before the Celtics' game. It's too early to tell if the style of play the Lakers have shown over their last two games is going to last. I have no doubt that the Lakers give it their best shot all the time. But sometimes teams have a game plan suited especially for playing the Lakers and the Lakers have to figure out how to go about penetrating that game plan. The Warriors are a team in disarray. Rumor has...

Magic-Warriors Preview

Tonight the red hot Orlando Magic(21-6), who have won eight out of their last ten games, will take on the Golden State Warriors(8-20) for the second time in a week. The Magic won the first game vs. the Warriors without Dwight Howard, who was resting a sore left knee, with strong performances from Jameer Nelson(32 points, 5-9 3pts) and Marcin Gortat(16 points, 13 rebs), who both scored career highs. The Magic are in the middle of a four game home stint against Western Conference powerhouses including the Lakers, Spurs and Hornets. Orlando is trying to prove to skeptics that they are real contenders in the East and can compete with the top teams in the league. Golden State is not having the year they were expecting. They are currently 8-20, sitting in the fourth spot in the Pacific Division. Golden State, who finished 48-34 last season, is not the same...

Thanks, and enjoy!Rising:Boston Celtics - Honestly, this team has been on the rise this entire season, piling up wins at a rate that we haven't seen since the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls. They now have won 18 in a row and have tied the league mark for the best start (26-2) for a team with two losses. Their recent success has been due in large part to the play of point guard Rajon Rondo. When the team needs him to score, he does it (as we saw on Sunday in the C's win...

Eight-Second Violation: Monday, December 22, 2008

Observations About the League By Phillip Barnett No love for Timmy? These last thre weeks we've had a lot of questions answered about who are the elite of the league and what teams will be in the running for the Blake Griffin sweepstakes. However, some questions have been left unanswered - until now. Why doesn't Tim Duncan get any love from the fans? In my last MVP rankings I had Tim Duncan ranked sixth amongst his peers as far as MVP consideration went at the time and I got some feedback from readers saying that Duncan was either too high on the list or should have been taken off completely. As a Lakers fan who has watched Mr. Duncan destroy my favorite team on more occasions than I can count on my two hands, I couldn't understand why he wouldn't get any love from basketball fans around the country...

No Ford? No Murphy? No Problem.

With both TJ and Troy sidelined, Jarrett Jack and Stephen Graham stepped into to fill the void and Danny Granger turned in another All-Star caliber performance as the Pacers downed the Warriors 127-120.Granger led the way with 41 points, including a perfect 17-17 from the line.  He also registered 11 boards and 6 assists in what was arguably the best single-game performance by a Pacer in the post-Reggie Miller era.  Jack and Marquis Daniels combined for 47 to shoulder the scoring burden left from Ford and Murphy's one game absence.Tonight was a good sign that things might be picking up for the Pacers.  They will try to keep up the pace Friday night against the suddenly competent Clippers....

Knicks trade Zach Randolph to the Clippers

In a matter of 24 hours, Knick GM and President Donnie Walsh traded the Knicks top two scorers. First, Jamal Crawford was dealt to the Warriors for Al Harrington. Now, Zach Randolph was dealt with guard Mardy Collins to the Clippers for Cuttino Mobley and Tim Thomas. This is Thomas's second stint with the Knicks. He spent part of the 2003-04 season with the Knicks after being traded from the Bucks for Keith Van Horn. With the Knicks that season, Thomas averaged a career-high 15.8 points per game in 24 games. Thomas spent the entire 2004-'05 season with New York, averaging 12 points a game in 71 contests. Through 10 games this season, he's averaging 9.5 points per game. As a Clipper, Thomas never really found the shooting stroke that carried him in his time with the Knicks and later on, the Suns. Cuttino Mobley coming to New York...Read more

Al Harrington a Knick?

According to the New York Post, a trade reuniting Al Harrington with Donnie Walsh in New York is imminent and will be completed at a conference call today.Harrington has been asking for a trade from the Golden St. Warriors since June, and it looks like the Warriors kept their word about trying to find a way to trade him. Golden State will reportedly receive Malik Rose in return.Rose has basically been eating up cap space and keeping a spot on the bench warm since he was originally traded to the Knicks for Nazr Mohammed in the 2004-05 season.Harrington has been averaging 12 points and 5.6 rebounds a game, but has only played in 5 games for the Warriors. For the Knicks, Harrington gives them yet another big to go along with their current stockpile of Zach Randolph, David Lee, Eddy Curry, Jared Jeffries and Jerome James. As long as the...Read more

NBA Fantasy Tracker: Look to Mason for points, threes

Every Wednesday, I'll highlight players who you should either add to your fantasy team if you need the help or put on your watch list. I'll also list a few players that should have their bags packed and may be on their way to free agency in your league.ADD/WATCH LISTRoger MasonMason was asked to step into a bigger role with the injuries to Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker, and so far he's been up to the challenge. In the Spurs most recent game against the Clippers, he had 21 points, including the game-winning three-pointer. Mason has shown he is not hesitant to shoot, and you should not hesitate to pick him up if he is a free agent in your league.Marquis DanielsDaniels has been a nice surprise for the Pacers. He's getting a lot of playing time and plenty of shots, averaging close to 15 points, 6 rebounds and 2.7...Read more

Top ten surprises of the NBA season so far

With most teams past the 10 game point in the NBA season, subplots and storylines are emerging. While the Lakers and Celtics are clearly the top teams in the league, LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers are playing well as the best of the rest. Other teams have not been up to the challenge. Heading in to Tuesday's action, here are the top ten surprises of the NBA season so far... 10. Mark Cuban's alleged insider trading - The league's most entertaining and passionate owner has been on the wrong side of David Stern before. He has a reputation for being a bit of a rogue, but always follows the law. The most surprising aspect of the story to me is public reaction fueled by speculation. Sure, the NBA is still reeling from image issues of the Tim Donaghy scandal two summers ago. But every piece of gossip is not...Read more

How the West will be won

With the NBA regular season set to tip off in less than a week, it's time to reveal my predictions for how the Western Conference will shape up.  Last year the requirement was at least 50 wins for a team to make the playoffs in the ultra competitive West, and I believe this year will be no different.  That's not to say that all the same teams will be there in the end, however...In addition to ranking the teams in the order that I believe they'll finish, I decided to also separate the teams into tiers based on their potential to win the West.  Here goes...Tier 1: The Clear Favorites1. New Orleans Hornets (1st in Southwest) - I realize that preseason performances should only be taken with a grain of salt, but the Hornets are 6-0 so far, and they have allowed the third-fewest points of any team during the...Read more

NBA 2008-9: Who Will Break Out, Who Will Break Down

Each NBA season features a few performers who exceed previous performances or expectations, and others who demonstrate that they are no longer able to contribute at the level to which we and they have become accustomed. Which players will cross either the positive or negative threshold this season, any why? Comers: LaMarcus Aldridge, F, Portland Trailblazers- While a 17.8 scoring clip and 7.6 reboundsare nothing to sneeze at, L.A. accomplished these things in a lineup where much more was asked of him than will be this season. The reason, of course, is that Greg Oden will be patrolling the pivot. Aldridge will continue to display his considerable defensive gifts, and blossom as a scorer, but free of primary responsibilties to police the lane. His defensive assignments will change. Their will be help when opponents penetrate. There will be more possessions and fast breaks triggered by Oden's rebounds and blocked shots....Read more
