Knicks Beat Celtics And No I'm Not High

So how is everybody? Did everyone have a pleasant Christmas/Hannukah/Kwanzaa/L. Ron Hubbard worshipping day? Mine was good, as evidenced by the lack of postings here at Father Knickerbocker, which I apologize for. I spent my holiday season away, and since I've been back I've been too drunk/lazy to get into the routine of uptating, but I've forced myself into opening the computer and not going straight to pornography sites in order to bring everyone the news about the Knicks. I'll take my medals later. And speaking of news, how about this: THE KNICKS BEAT THE CELTICS! Holy Shit! Can anybody believe this!? Cause I certainly can't. There must have been some sort of black magic or something going on that night. Wilson Chandler put up 31 points. 31 points! That's double his average on the year. This was the Knicks second win in nine games, and their first win against the...

NBA Power Rankings: New Year, New Number One

Dwight Howard - Keith Allison/Flickr.com

It's been two weeks since the last edition of my power rankings, where the East's mighty trio of Boston, Cleveland and Orlando took the top three spots. But that was last year, and now that 2008 has come and gone, it's time for a new leader: the Lakers. There was plenty of repositioning elsewhere as well, including the Detroit Pistons re-entering the top-10 for the first time since mid-November.1. Los Angeles Lakers (27-5) - Technically the Lakers are still a half-game behind the Celtics for the NBA's best record, but after L.A. beat Boston pretty convincingly on Christmas Day, then downed both Utah and Portland by double digits, there's no question who should be #1.2. Cleveland Cavaliers (27-6) - LeBron couldn't rally the Cavs past the Heat last week on his birthday despite dropping 24 of his 38 in the second half, and I can forgive him for that. But...

Marbury Potential Is Hard for People to Give Up On

What is it about potential, skill sets, and athleticism that makes us all clamor for those who don't deserve the attention?  Is it because not even one percent of the world can accomplish the things that we see on the hardwood/parquet floor every night?  Is it because we can make anybody in NBA 2K9 a threat to be great?(First side note: It really is true that NBA 2K9 is the Matrix for anyone that we want to turn into Neo and give them free reign on the pixilated battle ground that resides in my XBOX 360. I have seen Kevin Ollie and his mustache drop 62, Steve Francis play like he actually still existed, and Earl Watson perform like Larry Bird and Isiah Thomas settled their difference, had a love child, and named him after Earl Monroe and Matt Watson to show his greatness. I've seen all of these guys...

Eight-Second Violation: Monday, January 5, 2009

By Zach HarperCeltics Free FallNearly two weeks ago, the Boston Celtics were 27-2 and threatening to tear down the doors to the exclusive 70-win Club that was founded by the '95-'96 Chicago Bulls.  Now, thirteen days later and the Celtics would be ecstatic to just put together two straight wins.  The Celtics have faltered from their Christmas time road trip that has featured four losses in six games and now has the Celtics barely hanging on for the second best record in the league.  70 wins is nearly a mathematical impossibility and home court advantage throughout the playoffs is something they'll have to work for.  The Christmas Day loss to the Lakers in the Staples Center was excusable because the Lakers are a good team with a deadly superstar.  And the following loss to the Golden State Warriors in Oakland seemed to be the product of a back to...

Who Will Top The East This Season?

The race is on for the best record in the Eastern Conference, and subsequent home court advantage throughout the Eastern Conference Finals.  Right now it is a three team race between the Boston Celtics (29-6), the Cleveland Cavaliers (27-6), and the Orlando Magic (26-8). I would like to take a moment to mention to the fans of these teams that losing is inevitable in the NBA.  Even the finest teams in NBA history lost occasionally. I make this obvious overstatement because every fan of the Boston Celtics, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Orlando Magic will be taking each loss for the remainder of this season as if they just belly-caught a cannonball shot at close range and were blown into a vat of used razor blades. Yesterday, all three of these powerhouse teams lost to teams that, on paper at least, they should have beaten; as Boston lost to the...

NBA Studs and Duds (Jan. 4)

Studs:Wilson Chandler, New York KnicksChandler netted a new career high, scoring 31 points in a surprising win over the Celtics. Stephon to Boston?

Could this picture be taken with green uniforms? - Vedia

ESPN is reporting that Stephon Marbury might be signing with the Boston Celtics to try to rebuild his reputation as a high-scoring point guard. "Nearly one year since Stephon Marbury last played in a regular-season game, signals are getting stronger that the New York Knicks' outcast will eventually make his comeback with the Boston Celtics.""That still depends largely on Marbury's ability to negotiate his release from the Knicks after weeks of fruitless and oft-contentious buyout talks, but sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.com this week that Boston is Marbury's preferred destination if he manages to become a free agent and that the Celtics are indeed hopeful of signing him.""Celtics general manager Danny Ainge did not immediately respond to a request for comment on a New Year's Day holiday for the entire league and has generally refused to address the possibility of signing Marbury. Yet it's believed that the...

Knicks Lose To Generals, no, er, Timberwolves At Home

One of the ways that you know this is not a very good Knicks team is its inability to protect its home turf at MSG.  Instead of, "we must protect this house" the Knicks obviously sing Disney songs in the locker room "be our guest, be our guest, put our service to the test."  The Timberwolves who were 0 for December before showing up at the Garden, won this game easily. How bad are the Timberwolves?  I don't know how to describe the hideousness of their season - 4 wins, losers of 13 straight.  A team that averages 94.4 points a night, manages to score 120 against the Knicks.  A team with only 3 players averaging in double digits, has 7 score 10 or above against the pitiful Knick defense.  The T-Wolves managed a .514 shooting percentage from the field, and an amazing .542 percentage from three point range.  The Knicks...

NBA Stock Market: Rondo Keeping Celtics on Record Pace

Rajon Rondo surveying the floor (Photo via culhanen/flickr.com)

Note: We at MVN Outsider have re-organized our posting schedule in an effort to make our sports coverage more well rounded and timely. For those of you expecting to see the NBA Power Rankings today, that post has been moved to Tuesdays. With these changes, get ready to see more fresh content every day on every major sport. Thanks, and enjoy!Rising:Boston Celtics - Honestly, this team has been on the rise this entire season, piling up wins at a rate that we haven't seen since the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls. They now have won 18 in a row and have tied the league mark for the best start (26-2) for a team with two losses. Their recent success has been due in large part to the play of point guard Rajon Rondo. When the team needs him to score, he does it (as we saw on Sunday in the C's win...Read more

NBA Stock Market: Spurs back among the West's elite

Tim Duncan posts up Big Baby (flickr.com/Lorianne DiSabato)

Here's this week's risers and fallers from around the NBA...Rising:San Antonio Spurs - This team's 2-5 start to the season sure does seem like it happened ages ago. As of today San Antonio has won four games in a row and is back to being in the thick of the Southwest Division. In the last week the Spurs have gotten wins in Denver and Dallas in addition to cruising to home wins over the Warriors and Hawks. Manu Ginobili returned to his usual role as sixth man extraordinaire, while Tim Duncan continues to be virtually unguardable. San Antonio might not contend with the Lakers for the West's top seed in the playoffs, but they have as good of a chance as any team to finish as high as second.Carmelo Anthony - Last night's Nuggets-Timberwolves game probably didn't get a whole lot of viewers outside of the Denver and Minneapolis areas,...Read more

NBA Stock Market: Smith returns to surging Hawks

Rajon Rondo dunks as Bill Belichick looks on (flickr.com/Eric Kilby)

Wednesday night was a busy one in the NBA, and here's some teams and players that are on the move...Rising:Atlanta Hawks - Without Josh Smith, the Hawks' most complete player and best defender, the Hawks floundered after starting the season 6-0. He made his return last night against Memphis, and his presence opened up the floor for Joe Johnson and Mike Bibby, who combined to shoot over 65 percent from the field. Smith was active defensively from the start, finishing with a couple steals and a block in addition to 14 points, six rebounds and five assists in 28 minutes. The Hawks are a much better team with Smith in the lineup, and they'll need him as they prepare to tackle the Texas triangle beginning on Saturday in Dallas.Rajon Rondo - In guiding the Celtics to their league-best 18th win of the year on Wednesday, the wiry point guard got...Read more

Does Stephon Marbury Have A Future As An NBA Player?

With all the drama surrounding New York Knicks (for now) guard Stephon Marbury so far this NBA season, the question that remains is this: Would another NBA team give Marbury a chance to play for them? It's virtually a foregone conclusion that Marbury will not be a Knick much longer.  A trade seems unlikely, so the team will likely buyout the remainder of his contract.  Which would make him a free agent. Marbury's likely salary demands may take a lot of teams out of the picture of signing him for the rest of the season, and perhaps longer then that if there is mutual interest in signing him to a long-term contract. Marbury has been fairly well traveled in his career, playing for Minnesota, New Jersey and Phoenix before joining the Knicks as a favorite player of former Knicks' coach and front office head Isiah Thomas.  He has a history of not...Read more

Getting To The Bottom of The LeBron James/New York Media Circus

Let's get this out of the way right now: Neither the New York Knicks nor the Cleveland Cavaliers have a desirable history or any sort of discernible "tradition." Neither franchise has banners hanging from the rafters like the Boston Celtics. Neither team has dynasties in nearly every decade like the Los Angeles Lakers. And neither team has a legendary No. 23 hanging from the rafters like the Chicago Bulls. About that last part, though: The Cleveland Cavaliers are on their way to adding their own No. 23 from the rafters of Quicken Loans Arena. But not before the New York Knicks have something to say about it. Don't believe it? You probably weren't paying attention to what new Knicks President Donnie Walsh was doing on Friday. Walsh took two mammoth contracts belonging to Jamal Crawford and Zach Randolph and pawned them off for Al Harrington, Cutting Mobley, and Tim Thomas....Read more

Knicks trade Zach Randolph to the Clippers

In a matter of 24 hours, Knick GM and President Donnie Walsh traded the Knicks top two scorers. First, Jamal Crawford was dealt to the Warriors for Al Harrington. Now, Zach Randolph was dealt with guard Mardy Collins to the Clippers for Cuttino Mobley and Tim Thomas. This is Thomas's second stint with the Knicks. He spent part of the 2003-04 season with the Knicks after being traded from the Bucks for Keith Van Horn. With the Knicks that season, Thomas averaged a career-high 15.8 points per game in 24 games. Thomas spent the entire 2004-'05 season with New York, averaging 12 points a game in 71 contests. Through 10 games this season, he's averaging 9.5 points per game. As a Clipper, Thomas never really found the shooting stroke that carried him in his time with the Knicks and later on, the Suns. Cuttino Mobley coming to New York...Read more

Al Harrington a Knick?

According to the New York Post, a trade reuniting Al Harrington with Donnie Walsh in New York is imminent and will be completed at a conference call today.Harrington has been asking for a trade from the Golden St. Warriors since June, and it looks like the Warriors kept their word about trying to find a way to trade him. Golden State will reportedly receive Malik Rose in return.Rose has basically been eating up cap space and keeping a spot on the bench warm since he was originally traded to the Knicks for Nazr Mohammed in the 2004-05 season.Harrington has been averaging 12 points and 5.6 rebounds a game, but has only played in 5 games for the Warriors. For the Knicks, Harrington gives them yet another big to go along with their current stockpile of Zach Randolph, David Lee, Eddy Curry, Jared Jeffries and Jerome James. As long as the...Read more
